Bee Busy's mission is to build a strong, healthy community by enhancing the quality of life for vulnerable individuals and families in at risk communities. Their purpose is to decrease statistics among youth and young adults including but not limited to HIV/STD infection, suicide, runaways, illiteracy, high school dropouts and incarceration by providing competent, culturally diverse, non-discriminatory, life-changing programs.
Bee Busy Learning Academy, Inc. (Bee Busy) is a 501 (c) (3) community based, non-profit organization, established in October 2000, providing prevention services throughout Houston, focusing its efforts reaching the highly impacted area of Southwest Houston. As Bee Busy’s mission is to build strong, healthy communities by enhancing the quality of life for individuals and families in vulnerable, at-risk populations, their goals are to increase the awareness of HIV/STIs, increase the number of persons who know their HIV status through rapid HIV/STI screenings, reduce the transmission of HIV and provide timely linkage to care and treatment for HIV positive people.
Current agency programs include:
1) Early Diagnosis Program: a HIV counseling, testing and referral service targeting the highest impacted community, YMSM (young men who sleep with men) of color ages 15 - 29. This program provides more than 3,500 annual HIV and Syphilis tests, with 40% of those clients also being screened for HCV.
2) Comprehensive Risk Counseling Services (CRCS): services that are provided to the transgender community through a collaborative
3) Adolescent Health Education: delivery of comprehensive curriculums to youth and young adults ranging from 12 to 24 in schools, community centers, group homes and wherever groups of young people gather to increase knowledge about prevention practices. The STRAPP (Students Taking Responsibility and Action to Prevent Pregnancy) team focuses on preventing pregnancy by educating and empowering students to positively influence their peers. GINI (Get Informed, Not Infected) teaches safe sex practices and STD risk reduction.
4) Utest: a bold, dynamic public health campaign aimed at the Southwest Houston community and designed to encourage the practice of getting tested.
Bee Busy also has a full video and editing studio, equipped with the capacity to run a four-camera shoot, complete with lighting, sound and mastering. They also have digital photo camera equipment and lighting, with photo editing software to produce some dynamic visual projects.
